Fringe Benefits takes us into one of the most tender and personal healing stories in the Gospel of Mark. In Mark 5, we meet the bleeding woman, who suffered for twelve years physically, socially, emotionally, and financially. Her condition affected more than her body. It disrupted every part of her life and cut her off from worship, community, and the normal rhythms of belonging.

In this episode of the Gospel Threads Podcast, we explore why Fringe Benefits is more than a clever title. At the center of this story, a woman reaches for the fringe of Jesus’ garment in desperate hope. She believes that even the slightest touch might heal her. Jesus gives her far more than relief from suffering. He heals her, sees her, calls her forward, speaks to her with tenderness, and restores her dignity.

As we walk through Mark 5:25–34, we examine the cultural and biblical backdrop of her condition and consider why her suffering pushed her to society’s margins. Under the purity laws in Leviticus 15, her ongoing discharge of blood kept her in a continual state of uncleanness. That reality shaped where she could go, whom she could touch, and how she likely viewed herself. Fringe Benefits highlights the beauty of this moment: when she reaches for Jesus, her uncleanness does not make him unclean. Instead, his holiness makes her clean.

This conversation also opens the door to honest reflection on shame, confession, faith, and the courage required to step into the light. The bleeding woman could have slipped away unnoticed after her healing. Instead, Jesus called her out so he could restore her publicly, not shame her. When he calls her “daughter,” he gives her more than a miracle. He gives her identity, peace, and belonging.

In Fringe Benefits, we consider what this story means for women, for those walking through long seasons of suffering, and for anyone who has ever felt hidden, weary, or unworthy. This passage reminds us that Jesus does not recoil from our weakness. He invites us to come near, tell the whole truth, and receive mercy and grace in our time of need.
