Misinterpreted: Matthew 18:20

Matthew 18:20 says, “For where two or three are gathered in my name, there am I among them.”

You’ve probably heard this verse used to describe a small church gathering: “Well, it’s just a few of us… but where two or three are gathered, God is with us.”

It’s often meant to comfort. To say, “Even if the crowd is small, God still shows up.”
That sounds nice.
Encouraging, even.

The only problem? That’s not what the verse is about.

Yes, God is always with His people—but this verse is not about small attendance.
It’s about something much weightier.

What We Get Wrong

We often use this verse to say:

  • God is present in small gatherings
  • Jesus is with us as we try hard things
  • A few believers together is enough

Now, those ideas are true.
But when we use this verse that way, we completely miss the context.

And when you miss the context… you miss the weight of what Jesus is actually saying.

What the Verse Actually Means

Matthew 18:20 comes at the end of a passage about church discipline.

Jesus is describing a process for dealing with sin in the church:

  • One person confronts privately
  • Then two or three come together
  • Then it’s brought before the church

And right in the middle of that, Jesus says: “Where two or three are gathered in my name, I’m there.”

This isn’t about a small Bible study.

It’s about spiritual authority and accountability.

Jesus is saying: When believers come together in His name, to seek truth, to confront sin, to restore someone, He stands with them in that moment.

The Better Truth

This verse isn’t meant to make us feel better about small numbers, or to trust that God is with us if we’re trying something hard… It’s meant to make us take the church seriously.

Jesus is present when His people gather, especially when they do the hard, uncomfortable work of loving each other enough to speak truth.

Because real love doesn’t ignore sin.

And when sin is exposed, real love moves toward people, not away from them.

And here’s the beauty of it:

When that kind of community happens, when truth and grace come together, Jesus Himself is in the middle of it.

Not just observing. Not just approving.

Present. Active. Leading.

So yes—God is with you in your small group.

He’s with you in your living room.

But don’t miss this: This verse is less about how many people are in the room and more about what those people are doing when they gather.
